A quick way to get the gunk off once the stripper has done it's work is to use handfuls of pine hamster bedding from a pet store. If it's a stubborn finish, apply a think layer of stripper and lay a piece of plastic wrap on top to keep the solvents from evaporationg and you can leave it a half hour or so to attack the finish. Lacquer thinner is quickest, but naptha or mineral spirits will do as well. After any stripper you use you'll need to wash down the surface to remove the wax residue from the stripper (added to retard evaporation and allow the stripper to work longer). I like using Citri-Strip as it's effective and not as harsh as many others. If not, then I'd suggest using another kind. These strippers are methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) based. If you have multiple layers of finish to remove, then bottom-up is the way to go. The basic difference between the "stronger" types and the "safer" types in use is that the former works by soaking through and stripping from the bottom up the latter works from the top down. If you're just removing a clear finish or a single layer of paint any stripper will work just fine.
